How fortunate we are that the Mozart family spent so much 
time writing letters, and that, against all odds, many of the missives that passed among them were saved by their recipients and preserved for succeeding generations. The opera Le nozze di Figaro first surfaces in the family’s correspondence in late 1785. Wolfgang had been living in Vienna for four years by then. His mother had passed away, but his father, Leopold, was still living in the composer’s native Salzburg and his sister, Nannerl, was residing in St. Gilgen, about 20 miles distant from Salzburg.
